It is our goal to employ Active Learning activities with the use of iPad’s to boost the outlook of students’ perceptions of mathematics. We hope that while their perceptions change that the retention and passing rates of our mathematics courses will improve. With the use of iPad’s, we will polish our classroom teaching styles with interesting icebreakers, use mathematics videos to engage students with new content, include hands-on activities to keep the excitement going, include fun wrap-up activities and create assessment ideas that aim to increase retention. Nearpod is an innovative tool to get students involved in the lesson by incorporating surveys, questions, videos, and quizzes---all in one Nearpod lesson. Currently, students use their own electronic devices, and this can be problematic. Cellular devices do not always function well with the technologies needed for a mathematics classroom, and finding a stable signal in our basement location can be challenging. This program allows each student to have an individual iPad to use during the class. During class, students will engage in an Active Learning activity with a technology component such as Nearpod, Demos, games, videos, etc. The overarching program goal is to create a cadre of lessons that can ultimately be used across the MATH 1010K prescribed courses and, in turn, adapted to other prescribed mathematics courses.
