The Tennessee Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Center (TSEC) provides services for MTSU students and faculty to enhance instruction and educational research. Part of the mission of TSEC is to promote high quality STEM education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels using state-of-the-art technologies and innovative teaching techniques. Towards this end, Fairview 201 will be converted to a modular master classroom with video and audio capture for classroom presentations, a one-way window observation room, and a next-generation smart board. The close relationship between TSEC, CBAS, CoEd, the MSE Ph.D. program, and the MTeach program will allow the full utilization of the master classroom. Faculty members and program directors teaching 16 courses enrolling 434 students in 2017-2018 have already requested the master classroom because no teaching spaces with the proposed equipment and configuration are currently available on campus. Undergraduates students in courses that focus on teaching future STEM teachers how to teach: MSE 1010, 2010; MATH 3220, 3230; BIOL 3000; YOED 3520, 3550, 4040, 4050; or education research methods: BIO/CHEM/MATH/PHYS 4740 would benefit. Graduate STEM courses that will use the room for instruction on and practice of teaching include MSE 7001, 7170, and 7900. The listed courses would generate an initial utilization rate of 59%, or 5.0 hours per day. Faculty teaching courses testing innovative pedagogies for scholarly study and dissemination are also potential users. In addition, any open scheduling times can be used for workshops, supplementary learning opportunities, and camps.
