Wireless client technology has matured in the last 18 months; whereas wireless clients before often seemed as slow as a modem connection, today the speed is comparable to being hard wired on the campus network. Standards have also improved to allow for interoperability; previously wireless networks did not work well with mixed components, but with vendors adapting standards based technologies interoperability is no longer the problem it used to be. This proposal is for constructing the network infrastructure to provide for wireless network access for the new courtyard between Business Aerospace and the University Library as well as the KUC Grill and Second Floor Lounge. This proposal lays the groundwork for completing a wireless access corridor between Davis Science Building and MassComm in the future, in line with the Master Plan which calls for this space to be an open mall. This would benefit all students by providing network access in an outdoor setting and in the KUC.
