MTSU’s Media Arts Department services approximately 800 majors and a growing number of minors enrolled in programs that teach the development, creation and management of various kinds of digital media. In particular, Animation (200+ majors) and Video and Film Production (400 majors) extensively require computer labs in their curriculum. Enrollment in these two programs has increased 40% over the last four years, and this has resulted in a shortage of lab time and space. For the past several semesters Media Arts labs have been booked solid from 8:00 AM to 9:05 PM every weekday except Friday evening. For the last few semesters, it has also been necessary to use additional outside labs that have proven to be inadequate for the computationally robust work of media production. Fortunately, the department will have priority access to two additional labs in COE as of Fall 2020. COE 253 will require new lab facilities from the ground up. COE 247 is currently equipped with older PCs that will need to be replaced with more powerful PCs and larger screens. We will move a set of relatively new PCs from Bragg 167 to COE 247, and replace them with new Macs. PC labs are best for Animation classes, and Macs are more compatible with Video and Film Production needs. In addition to the cost of the computers, there is also discipline-specific software, construction, and upgrades to the video projection
