The Social Work Department has expanded considerably over the past few years, both in terms of enrollment and in the use of instructional technology which requires access to a master classroom. Social Work Faculty are rarely able to schedule classes in existing master classrooms. Many of the Social Work Faculty have developed course materials which require the use of a computer, projector, and other equipment. This includes a telecourse which has been developed by Dr. Frost. Dr. Lancaster and Professor Sanborn use significant web-based instruction and are in the process of developing web-based courses. Dr. Shaw-McEwen and Dr. Taylor have developed TBR on-line courses. Much of that material could be used to enrich traditional classes if we had reliable access to a master classroom. Of the nine social Work faculty, eight have developed a commitment to develop course materials using instructional technology. Several faculty and even some students have developed Power Point presentations which we are unable to use. Our ability to use these materials would be greatly enhanced by access to a Master Classroom. Social Work is a new department which has not yet received any Technology Access Fee funding. This master classroom will be used by and benefit all of the 200+ undergraduate social work majors, and others taking Sociology, Anthropology and English classes scheduled for Peck Hall 321. University master planning includes the development of a masters program in Social Work. We need to continue to improve our capacity to use instructional technology. A Master Classroom would be a significant improvement in that capacity.
