Construction management professionals today must be highly aware of the safety and health hazards on active construction job sites. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that project managers be capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and have the ability take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. The newly developed Construction Safety and Health Management (CMT 4160) course offered within The School of Concrete and Construction Management focuses on preparing students to be able to prevent worksite injuries and illnesses be educating them on OSHA Construction Standards (29CFR1926) and showing practical means for hazard identification and elimination on job sites. In the academic year 2021-2022, this course has/is serving 70 students. Upon successful completion of all elements of this course, students are awarded a 30-Hour Construction Safety Card that is highly valuable to employers as these students enter the workforce. As this is a new course, teaching tools and equipment available for hands-on activities is extremely limited. Members of our Construction Management Industry Board have expressed interest in seeing our program advance to keep pace with current industry practices. In order to expose students to frequently cited safety violations on job sites and the corrective actions required, we propose purchasing classroom safety kits for hands-on demonstrations. The safety kits include: 1) a 1/3 scale supported frame scaffolding kit ($3,070.00), 2) excavation worksite hazard demonstration kit ($3,600.00), 3) classroom highway worker training kit ($395.95), and 4) a drop dummy for fall protection ($269.99) [+$350.86 shipping].
