The Department of Chemistry requests a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), scroll pumps to operate existing mass spectrometers, a pyrolyzer for GC/MS analysis of non-volatile biochemical and forensic samples, and an ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. This equipment will be used for upper-division courses that serve the majors of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Forensic Science. We use the existing Shimadzu GC/MS for laboratory courses, research courses, and federally funded research. The shared use is a compromise between instructional effectiveness and research quality. This shortcoming has been noted by the external reviewers of the Chemistry M.S. and Forensic Science B.S. programs. The listed instruments will support the accreditation of the Forensic Science program as well as the support of existing Chemistry B.S./M.S. degree programs and the newly approved M.S.P.S. concentration in Chemistry Analytics. Many students will get hands-on access to the requested equipment through required and elective upper-division course work. The courses are listed below with a description of historical and anticipated student enrollment demand. CHEM 4231 Instrumental Analysis: 28 students, 2017-2021; CHEM 6231 Intermediate Analytical Chemistry: 44 students, 2017-2021; CHEM 4530 Biochemical Techniques: 42 students, 2017-2021. This number will increase dramatically in 2022 when this course is required for all 256 Biochemistry Majors. FSCH 4231 Instrumental Analysis for Forensic Chemistry: 46 students, 2017-2021. FSCH 4231 is a required course for the Forensic Science program (total of 181 students in 2021) that is currently under review for accreditation. Chemistry research courses CHEM 6640, CHEM 4880, 3880, 2880 have an annual enrollment of 90-120 students.
