The Department of Chemistry requests a compact portable mass spectrometer to meet the needs of laboratory instruction for General Chemistry (CHEM 1111), Quantitative Analysis (CHEM 2231), Elements of Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2031), Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 3011/3021), and Instrumental Analysis for Forensic Science and Chemistry majors (CHEM 4231/6231 & FSCH 4231). We currently do not have mass spectrometry (MS) experiments for CHEM 1111 and CHEM 3011/3021 laboratories even though MS concepts are covered in the classroom and textbooks. Providing an MS laboratory experience is critical to student learning and will help modernize the lab facilities essential for the accreditation of Chemistry degree programs by the American Chemical Society and the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission. MS instrumentation is widely used in the chemical industry, biomedical diagnosis, pharmaceutical testing, forensic analysis, and environmental monitoring. It will have broad impact on MTSU students majoring in chemistry, forensic science, geology or concentrating in pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, pre-dental, industrial hygiene, and environmental science programs. Over one thousand MTSU students each year will benefit from this TAF request, with specific breakdown of enrollment by course as follows. CHEM 1111: average of 937 students per year over the past five academic years; CHEM 2031: 45 students per year; CHEM 2231: 38 students per year; CHEM 3011: 310 students per year; CHEM 3021: 175 students per year; CHEM 4231/6231: 23 students, Spring 2023; FSCH 4231: 14 students, Spring 2023. Chemistry research courses such as CHEM 6640, CHEM 4880, and CHEM 2880/3880 often require MS data.
