To serve the needs of music students, the School of Music (SoM) desires to outfit both SFA 117 (Choral Hall) and SFA 101 (Jazz Room) with technology to capture student performances via video/audio. This would allow students to record their performances, and we would capture their performances via LiveStream to our SoM YouTube channel. Adding LiveStream capability would allow students to better evaluate their own performance, and it would also allow us to share performances with the community. We would need to install a curtain system in SFA 101 to align with the performance curtains that were installed in SFA 117 in Fall 2022. The curtains allow us to better convert the classroom to a visually aesthetic student performance space. The SoM presents over 200 concerts per year in the WMB Hinton Hall. Upgrading SFA 101 and 117 would allow us to better serve music students by helping meet this demand, more effectively using multiple spaces for student performances. The School of Music also proposes to upgrade backstage and emergency egress lighting. The SoM’s primary concert hall, Hinton Hall, is using a lighting system that is a hodge-podge of modified original (1980) equipment, plus a patchwork of added gear that is not compatible with the original equipment. The added equipment is also set up in a way that is a hindrance to the production of live music. Currently, there is little backstage lighting for concert production staff and performers, and there is NO emergency egress lighting.
