This proposal is to replace the aging recording console in Recording Industry Studio B in the College of Media and Entertainment. The SSL Duality console is 15 years old and is beyond its expected life-span. It has been developing frequent problems in recent years with some components of the console now unusable and the desk itself becoming unreliable for classes and production projects. Recording Studio B is one of the flagship studios of the Department of Recording Industry and is used by both undergraduate and graduate students in the following courses: RIM 3010H, RIM 4025, RIM 4650, RIM 4660, RIM 4670, MRAT 6140, MRAT 6110, MRAT 6130, MRAT 6210, MRAT 6155, and MRAT 6650. It is also used for special projects that serve the wider college and university community. Examples of these projects include collaborations between undergraduate songwriting and graduate (M.F.A.) programs, recordings for the Center for Popular Music’s record label Spring Fed Records, and collaborations between the Media Arts and Recording Industry Departments. The Recording Industry studios run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A major equipment failure can be extremely disruptive to classes as well as student project work. In addition to class meetings, students rely on the studio each term to work on assigned class projects in the evenings and on weekends.  Full funding for this proposal is desired, but if that is not possible, a significant portion of funding would enable the department to seek additional funds from other sources to make up the difference.
