Replacement of Existing Technology

We have 4 different types of PCs in the ph205 portion of the lab. They vary in age. The maintenance situation is extremely difficult and we regularly (weekly) require OIT assistence. The oldest machines (11 PCs at 3yrs) are in constant need of OIT visits for software and hardware work. Additionally, the operating system (WIN 98) is unstable and will not support some of the newer versions of statistical software that are required. Without replacing all computers we will be drawing heavily on OIT for maintenance and we will be unable to provide students with the current versions of software that they need to be familiar with. We wish to slightly enlarge the lab (5 machines) as we need some machines that will be more specific for the quantitative and I/O program needs.

This request, for computers and software, is for use by the department's many undergraduate and graduate students in our main labortories. Student usage (lab ph204/ph205) is a minimum of 450 students per semester with multiple visits by each student. Student usage: Psy 302 (statistics) 130, Psy628&629 (grad stat) 80, Psy 307&408(research methods) 105, Psy dept laboratory courses - 70 students, Thesis analysis and individual student research 60. Usage determined based upon class rosters over the semester and polling graduate students. Also based upon polling faculty about research with undergrads and grads.
