KOM 161 and SAG 202

Replacement of Existing Technology

In order for students to adeqately access Web-based materials requrired in the courses, the computers need more than the 64MB of memory they now have.

Presently, the use of technology in KOM 161, a master classroom, is severely limited by the 64MB on the student computers. Developmental Studies courses taught in this classroom are Web-enhanced courses. The technology being requested will allow students to adequately access Web-based materials required for the courses. The new operating system would also allow handicap accessibility. Annually, approximately 720 undergraduate students will benefit directly from these improvements. The request for KOM 161 includes the following: (1) replace visual presenter at teachers station; (2) add 256 MB to 20 G4 cubes; (3) add 256 MB to 4 G4 towers; (4) upgrade operating systems to all computers to X.3.2; and (5) Apple Remote Desktop. The Developmental Studies Math Lab last year served 1300 unique students for over 6000 visits. These number are based on a tracking login program that is used to track attendance at the lab. The lab has recently been updated with 24 Dell computers. However, there are no printers in the lab. Several teachers have lessons and activity sheets for students to print, which currently cannot be done. This proposal is asking for 3 network printers to facilitate the number of students that are projected to attend the lab. The lab also provides students with video tutorials for every section of every chapter of the textbook. Unfortunately, the TV/VCR combo units used to view the videos are not functioning properly. This proposal seeks 4 TV/VCR combo units.
