The laboratory experience is central to student learning in the natural sciences. Hands on investigation by each student, using the best and most appropriate equipment, is the surest link between lecture material and real scientific understanding. Moreover, the excitement of discovery in the laboratory is often the catalyst to motivate students to greater academic success. The proposed upgrade to the First Year Chemistry Laboratories is intended to provide equipment to support the mission of beginning laboratory courses Chem 1010, 1020, 1030, 1110, and 1120. The laboratories in the Wiser Patten Science building are severely outmoded and currently are unable to meet the needs of growing enrollment and increasing safety concerns. Training our students with the most modern equipment will more adequately prepare them for careers in health and technical areas, as well as help educate the general student to become scientifically literate. Chemistry, Biology, Pre-Professional (pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, etc.), Aerospace, Nutrition, and Agribusiness students take these courses. In addition, these courses are also General Studies courses which are selected by a very wide range of student majors. During the Fall 2003 semester the total of students in these five courses numbered 943; over a year the enhanced laboratory experience would benefit 1800-2000 students.
