Half of the faculty in the Chemistry Department now use technology based presentations in their classes if facilities are available. More would if they had access to facilities all of the time so that there was not a need to develop two rather different lectures. A significant body of technology-based material has been developed for faculty to enhance their classroom teaching but access to master classrooms is limited. The department shares priority access to two master classrooms, DSB 100 (shared with Biology) and WPS 102 (shared with Physics and Astronomy). Requests by faculty to be assigned to a master classroom greatly exceeds the time available in DSB 100 and WPS 102 and it is not always desirable or feasible for class sizes to be as large (75-100) as is required for efficient use of these rooms. The purpose of this proposal is to upgrade DSB 104 to a fully equipped master classroom while maintaining the existing capabilities for traditional lecture demonstrations. The department schedules classes in DSB 104 from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM plus some night sections. Based on the number of periods and the size of the room approximately 1200 students per academic year would directly benefit from the project.
