Much of modern science teaching philosophy revolves around research and hands-on activities. When capital project funding ceased a few years ago, we began a plan to convert lectures rooms DSB 130 and 131 to master classrooms with laboratory capabilities. Even now, new laboratory space is at best 6 years away. Phase I for DSB 131 was funded and conversion completed. A separate heating/cooling unit for both rooms and a door connection was installed, and 131 received work space, cabinets, and biotechnology equipment. Phase II, conversion of DSB 130 to a master classroom, was previously funded. This request is Phase III, would complete the project, and involves installation of counters, cabinets, seating for 24, electrical modifications, and essential equipment for teaching modern cell biology. The following courses/laboratories (with annual enrollment history) will be offered in the converted space: BIOL 4110/6330 (offered 3 times/year, 115 students), 4210/6390 (2 times/year, 70 students), 4300/6380 (2 times/year, 90 students), 4570/5570 (alt. years, 10 students), 4590/6590 (alt. years, 5 students), 4720/6720 (1 time/year, 14 students), and 4730/6730 (1 time/year, 8 students). Thus, a total of around 300 upper division/graduate students per year would take classes in this room.
