There is currently no foreign language software in the MTSU Department of Foreign Languages which provides audio/visual, interactive training in all the language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Language classes meet only three hours per week, so this type of software would fill a need both in and outside the classroom. The Rosetta Stone is the #1 language-learning program in the world, used successfully by millions of people in 150 countries. It has been adopted by government agencies, corporations like IBM, universities like Johns Hopkins, and is not textbook specific. In keeping with the thrust to globalize all departments at MTSU, the Honors College and the Department of Foreign Languages is requesting that copies of the Rosetta Stone software be placed in the Paul W. Martin building and the language laboratory of the Boutwell Dramatic Arts building to serve the 5,000 plus students who take foreign languages per year [number reported by Ruth Watkins, secretary of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, January 27, 2006]. Dr. Ann Sloan, Special Assistant to the Provost for International Relations, expressed her support for the Rosetta Stone software in her report on the Strategic Plan for MTSU.
