The Dean’s category 2 proposal includes four discipline specific needs from three departments. English—Equipment will support field research in graduate folklore and linguistics courses where digital and visual records of people and places are vital. Our graduate students (Ph.D. and M.A.) interview subjects, record speech, take oral histories, and further document the process with visual records. Geoscience—GIS software used in Geographic Information Systems, Advanced Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Cartography, Image Interpretation, Computer/Field Methods in Geology, and Geologic Remote Sensing courses (upper division or graduate credit). Items requested are licensing, upgrades and support for ARCGIS and ERDAS Imagine software--required to continue operations of GIS and Remote Sensing classes and labs. Communication—Speech analysis hardware, with analysis/synthesis of speech signal software, allows familiarization of protocols for speech signals analysis prior to graduate school. CSL will be used to analyze, learn diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and conduct research in: CDIS 3150, CDIS 3200, CDIS 3400, CDIS 4900. ~60 students will use equipment. Theatre— Establish a theatre computer lab for all three lighting classes. Currently, lab is all Macs used primarily for word processing. The creation of a 5 seat PC lab could accommodate many theatre classes and their software.
