The McLean School of Music has 20 adjunct applied music instructors teaching required one-on-one private lessons to ~120 students/ semester (students drawn from majors across campus). Currently, this teaching occurs in existing practice rooms, limiting availability for other students needing practice, or in classrooms, reducing classroom scheduling. Consequently, we seek to convert SFA 307 so to allow two instructors to simultaneously teach these lessons in a proper acoustical environment. This can be accomplished by installing two soundproof, state-of-the-art virtual technology teaching spaces (V-Rooms), four desks, and instrumental storage units that provides room for teaching, meeting with students, and securing instruments/teaching materials. This conversion maximizes space usage since currently SFA 307 is a small room that hold at most 20 people, and it’s acoustically porous (noisy, not well suited to the teaching of music, whether in class or in applied settings). The two teaching units will be state-of-the-art Virtual Acoustical rooms fitted with technology for creating nine different acoustical environments, replicating a wide variety of performance spaces, allowing faculty to assist students in adapting their sound to different performance venues. Units are acoustically sealed, permitting two simultaneous lessons. The spaces could also be utilized by chamber music groups.
