The College of Education and Behavioral Science offers undergraduate and graduate educational methods classes, instructional design classes, criminal justice seminars, and advanced topic seminars in LRC 241. The current classroom design is outdated, consisting of an instructor station and 7 aging pc’s on carts. We should be training our future teachers and criminal justice professionals using advanced technologies that are student-centered, active and collaborative. Instructors should model collaborative teaching and investigative strategies, and pre-service teachers should refine their teaching in an environment that enhances reflective decision-making. The technology available in the Honors 218 ACT classroom is ideally suited for meeting these instructional goals. We propose installing an electronic flip chart system, four lcd projectors, a walk-and-talk lectern with instructor notebook and touch panel screen, 18 student think pads, 6 plasma screens, and associated classroom peripherals in LRC 241. With new flexible seating, these technologies will facilitate collaborative, student-centered learning. Additionally, a video-recording system (remote control camera and ceiling-mounted microphones) will allow pre-service teachers to observe, reflect on and improve their own teaching. During 2006, 24 classes were offered in LRC 241, benefiting approximately 576 students. We anticipate heavier use after the room has been upgraded.
