The University Lab in Walker Library needs to replace some student-use-only laptop computers. The old computers are out of warranty and are worn out. The laptops circulated 8,039 times in 04-05, 10,902 times during 05-06, and 15,105 times during 06-07. They have circulated 8,581 times during Fall, 07, suggesting a probable circ count of over 16,000 for 07-08. Laptops that need to be replaced are Dell Latitude 800s. This time we propose to acquire Dell Latitude ATG D630s which are certified against military standards for durability. These laptops cost more, but we anticipate the reduction in wear and tear will offer compensatory savings in maintenance.
