The National Academy of Sciences in its National Science Education Standards recommends more emphasis on "understanding scientific concepts and developing abilities of inquiry" and less emphasis on "knowing scientific facts and information." We propose that AMG 115 be converted into a MASTER CLASSROOM/STUDIO LABORATORY for our proposed course, "Contemporary Issues in Science" and other science courses. We have received funding for data collection devices and "clickers" from the National Science Foundation for use in this classroom. This classroom will facilitate collaborative learning, inquiry-based activities using innovative technology, conventional and web-based instruction and assessment and a sense of community that optimizes student learning and success. Students will learn to think independently and critically, collect and analyze information, work in teams, and communicate conclusions. They will be able to read and understand current issues in science and how science plays a role in the global community. This classroom/studio laboratory will have a positive impact on general studies science and has the full support of the Chemistry Department, Physics and Astronomy Department, and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. Fully utilized, the classroom could serve up to 450 students enrolled in PSCI 1030/1031, CHEM 1030, PHYS 1130/1131 or CHEM 1130/1131 (under development).
