The University Lab at the Learning Resources Center provides students with access to 97 computers in three labs (LRC 101, LRC 101A and LRC 101B) and a graduate multimedia development center (LRC 101S) 72 hours per week. In addition to offering standard software, we install discipline-specific hardware and software to serve students in Recording Industry Management, Electronic Media Communication, Art, Music, Nursing, Psychology, Sociology and other departments across campus. We also house 25 carrels for patrons of the Media Library and the Phillip C. Howard Music Library to use for viewing and listening to video and audio in their collections. In 2008, student walk-in visits to our facilities totaled 41,875, up 22% from 2007 as traffic from closing discipline-specific labs shifted to our University lab. Because of this increase in walk-in traffic, students often wait for computers during peak times. We propose upgrading five listening carrels with computers and large screen computer/television monitors. These upgraded stations will provide library patrons with better listening/viewing quality as well as provide additional computers for University Lab patrons, thereby reducing wait times.
