The Biology Department requests funds to purchase instrumentation for the Microbiology and Physiology laboratories. Students enrolled in required and elective courses taught in these laboratories are majors or minors in biology, pre-nursing students, and/or pre-health science majors. The department is committed to hands on learning, and up to date equipment in sufficient quantities is essential. Items requested replace existing older/broken items and are needed to provide for more hands on experiments, or represent new technology. In the absence of adequate physical facilities, it is imperative that we make every effort to efficiently use existing space and provide modern, working equipment. The requested items represent a significant improvement to these laboratories. Courses listed below meet for 2-3 hours laboratory each week. Microbiology laboratories are: BIOL 2231 and 2231H (General Microbiology, 25 lab sections = 500+ enrolled/year), and upper division courses (BIOL 3211, 4431, 4441, 4511, and 4731, all of which carry a graduate number and enroll about 125 undergraduates/graduates/year. Physiology laboratories are: BIOL 4111, 4211, 4301, 4501, 4561, 4571, and 4591 enroll about 350 undergraduates/graduates/year. All courses listed are typically offered at least once a year, are technology rich with multiple instruments and directly impact about 1,000 students/year.
