1.) Speech/Theatre: While much learning occurs in class, more lasting growth occurs in the trial and error process of creating a show. Consequently, we would like to convert the Studio into a true “black box” space for collaborative projects between theatrical disciplines (playwriting, directing, design and performance). The Studio is booked over 30 hours/week for classes (affecting over 275 multi-disciplinary students) with an extra 500-700 students participating in rehearsals/performances (over 1000 additional semester hours). We wish to install a grid system with basic lighting and sound equipment for the students to utilize in experimental technical study. The risers must be deconstructed for access to the overhead grid-- allowing the flexibility needed for students learning to design a variety of stage configurations. A video presentation package allows integration of video into live performance, a current performance trend. A true black box would make our program (the largest in the state) highly competitive with other undergraduate programs. 2.) History: These softwares are vitally important to the academic curriculum of MA/Ph.D. degrees in Public History. Mastery of these programs is required for graduate students seeking careers in museums and archives.
