The Department of Physics and Astronomy currently shares WPS 201 with the Department of Chemistry. It is used primarily for general education Physical Science (PSCI 1031) but is underutilized due to limited room capabilities. Each semester, over 700 students enrolled in PSCI 1031 share their time between WPS 100 and WPS 201. Currently the rooms are not used efficiently and many more students could be accommodated in additional science lectures with a master classroom renovation to WPS 201. It is no secret that master classrooms are in high demand. In particular, the only non-laboratory space that Physics and Astronomy shares priority for scheduling holds 24 students (WPS 220) – small enough that physics lecture sections are outgrowing the room, but not large enough to justify splitting into multiple sections. A 34 seat master classroom would add capabilities for the PSCI 1031 sections to facilitate enriched student interactions, and ease scheduling pressures on lecture space. Dr. Pearson, chair of the Department of Chemistry, has referred to this project as a “win-win” proposal for each of our departments – potentially benefiting PHYS, ASTR, CHEM, and PSCI courses
