The University Lab at the LRC provides students with access to 102 computers in three labs (LRC 101, 101A and 101B) and a graduate multimedia development center (LRC 101S) 72 hours per week. We install standard and discipline-specific hardware and software to serve students in departments across campus. We also house 25 carrels for patrons of the Media Library and Music Library to use for viewing and listening to video and audio in their collections. In 2009, student visits to our computer facilities totaled 43,690, up 26% in the past two years due to recent closings of discipline-specific labs. Students often must wait for computers during peak times. In 2009, we upgraded five listening carrels with computers and new audio equipment to reduce wait time for our computer patrons and improve audio quality. We propose upgrading the remaining 17 carrels in 2010. We also propose replacing our current one-sided HP printers with high-volume duplex printers to reduce paper waste and improve efficiency. In response to patron requests, we propose upgrading memory for 50 workstations in LRC 101A and 101B. Finally, we request funding for software renewals and upgrades for all student workstations.
