Upgrade of Existing Technology
The equipment needs replacement because of age and unreliability.

Both of our external program reviews since the inception of the department have resulted in an emphasis on the outdated non-research equipment we have in the department. One reviewer indicated that this could be a serious deterrent to our attracting new students to the program. We have just finished the design and implementation of a totally new pedagogy for our algebra-based introductory physics sequence. Since the equipment needed has been firmly established by the new course design, it is now time to upgrade the equipment. Some of the equipment has been in use in the department for 15 - 20 years and faces a high probability of failure at some unexpected time. The project will replace all outdated equipment in the introductory physics laboratory thus modernizing and enhancing the course. The number of students taking this course sequence totals approximately 500 per year.
