The CIM Laboratory located in the Voorhies Building is the lifeline to the CIM Department. It is staffed with a full time laboratory manager that became University funded in 2011 after 5 years of industry funding. Each year the students request more lab time and more hands on projects embedded in their course material. Several elective courses as well as required courses utilize the lab to perform the practical assignments. We rely on our facilities, equipment and staff an enormous amount and have added three new lab courses to the CIM curriculum since 2009. This additional effort in the lab has created a need for upgraded mixers and upgraded fundamental lab equipment that can handle the increased use each semester. Additionally we are working with a computer operating system for our main strength machine that is still on a Windows 98 Operating System. An ExtendTM Universal upgrade to the strength machine is vital to continue to generate data for undergraduate laboratory work. A total of six courses are affected by these discipline specific equipment requests: CIM 3000 Properties of Concrete, CIM 3050 Concrete Construction Methods, CIM 4200 Senior Lab, CIM 4800 Decorative Concrete; CIM 4800 Concrete Masonry; CIM 4800 Advanced Mix Design. The first three classes are required courses of all 250 undergraduate majors in the department. The last three courses are special problems courses that approximately 75 undergraduate students take each year.
