Multimedia materials such as electronic textbooks, workbooks, DVDs and online streaming video, etc. are now an integrated and essential part of foreign language teaching. These electronic materials are used on a daily basis by foreign language faculty and GTAs in their classroom instruction. BDA 316A currently has a mobile master classroom cart; however, the room configuration is such that the cart takes up 5-6 seats and is still very awkward to use – the projection is always skewed, the instructor must crawl over desks to use the ELMO, the internet connection falls out from the stretch across the room, the board is unusable when the screen is down, etc. Currently this room services approximately 240 students per semester, of which 6-15 per semester are graduate students (graduate faculty are choosing to use one of our other 4 classrooms instead of this one because the equipment is easier to use in those rooms). We ask to install a permanent master classroom console in BDA 316A so that both our faculty and GTAs will be able to make full use of multimedia materials and online resources in their classroom instruction and the department will be able to accommodate (more) students in the classroom more comfortably. This project will finish off the updating of our 5 classrooms to master classrooms, as well as the consequent disposal of asbestos materials in the ceilings and floors of the classrooms.
