William R. Kampbell
Marines

William R. “Bill” Kampbell, retired Master Sergeant, United States Marine Corps, exemplifies lifelong service—both in uniform and in community leadership. Enlisting in January 1967, Bill served with distinction, including a combat tour in Vietnam in 1968, and retired in December 1988 after more than two decades of honorable service, continuing to serve in the fleet Marine Corps Reserve for an additional 9 years.
Upon settling in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Bill continued his mission of service with unwavering dedication. He volunteered as Chaplain at the Veterans Administration Recovery Center, offering spiritual support and guidance to fellow veterans navigating recovery. His commitment deepened through his role on the Mental Health Council at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center, where he advocated for holistic care and veteran well-being.
Bill was a driving force behind the establishment of the Veterans Treatment Court in Rutherford County, recognizing the need for a justice system that understands the unique challenges faced by veterans. As the court launched, Bill not only completed mentor training but also recruited and inspired other veterans to join the Mentor Program—an essential pillar of the court’s success. His leadership helped create a network of peer support that continues to transform lives.
Beyond institutional advocacy, Bill has built enduring ministries rooted in compassion and moral leadership. At Experience Church, he founded a military ministry that has served veterans and their families for over eleven years, fostering community, healing, and purpose. Recognizing the spiritual needs within the local jail system, Bill also initiated a weekly Bible study at the Rutherford County Jail, providing hope and guidance to inmates for more than a decade. Additionally, he leads the church’s “Over 50” ministry, now in its sixth year, offering fellowship and support to older adults navigating life’s later chapters.
Bill Kampbell’s legacy is one of quiet strength, moral conviction, and relentless service. His work bridges military and civilian life, justice and mercy, tradition and renewal. For his extraordinary contributions to veterans and the broader community, he is a deeply deserving nominee for the Nunley Award.
