Q: What is Canvas?
A: Canvas is MTSU’s new learning management system (LMS). It’s the website and app you’ll use to access your courses, submit assignments, check grades, message instructors, and more. Canvas replaces D2L Brightspace.

Q: Why is MTSU switching from D2L to Canvas?
A: Canvas is easier to use, mobile-friendly, and better integrated with the tools you already use (like Zoom, Office 365, and more). Students across the country love it – and we think you will too. Here is list of reasons why we switched.

Q: When will we start using Canvas?
A: All MTSU classes will be in Canvas beginning Summer 2026. Here is the official project website with more explanation and a timeline.

Q: Will I still need to log in to D2L?
A: After the transition, D2L will no longer be used for new courses. You might have read-only access to past D2L classes for a short time, but all active learning will take place in Canvas.

Q: How do I log in to Canvas?
A: Go to the Canvas login page and log in using your MTSU credentials (the same as your D2L, PipelineMT, or email login). Don’t forget to bookmark it!

Q: Is there a mobile app?
A: Yes! Download the Canvas Student app on iOS or Android to access your courses, check grades, get notifications, and message your instructors – anytime, anywhere.

Q: Will my classes look different in Canvas?
A: Yes, but in a good way. Each class may be a little different based on your instructor, but Canvas has a consistent and student-friendly layout that helps you find what you need faster. You can access the Canvas Orientation to guide you through the main features and functions of your course.

Q: What happens to my old classes and grades from D2L?
A: You won’t lose them! Past courses and grades will still be available through D2L for a limited time, and permanent records are stored in PipelineMT.

Q: Will I still get reminders and due dates?
A: Yes! Canvas includes a built-in calendar, to-do list, and personal notifications. You can even choose to get reminders by email or push notifications through the app.

Q: What if I need help finding things in my course?
A: Each class will include a “Start Here” or “Welcome” module to show you around. You can also visit the Canvas Student Orientation in your dashboard.

Q: Where do I submit assignments in Canvas?
A: You’ll submit assignments inside each course using the “Assignments” or “Modules” area. Most submissions are just a couple of clicks.

Q: How will I check my grades?
A: Click the “Grades” link inside each course to see scores and instructor feedback. Canvas shows exactly what you’ve turned in and what’s missing.

Q: Will I still take quizzes and tests in Canvas?
A: Yes! Canvas supports quizzes, timed exams, and even proctored tests. Your instructors will give you clear directions in each course.

Q: How do I contact my instructors in Canvas?
A: You can use the Inbox in Canvas to message your instructors or classmates. You can also reply to announcements or use comments on assignments.

A: Yes, but they’ll be easier to navigate. Expect to still read, watch videos, post discussions, take quizzes, and submit assignments.

Q: Do I need to do anything right now?
A: Complete the orientation, check your to-do list, and get comfortable before the semester begins. When you get access to Canvas, log in and explore!

Q: Is Canvas harder than D2L?
A: Most students say Canvas is easier to use and more organized. It just takes a few minutes to get used to it. That’s why we’re providing orientation and videos to help you adjust quickly.

Q: Can I customize how Canvas looks or notifies me?
A: Yes! You can choose how you get alerts (email, text, push), rearrange your dashboard, and even color-code your classes.

Q: What if I fall behind or miss something?
A: Canvas makes it easy to catch up. Your course calendar, “to-do” list, and assignment tracker help you stay on top of deadlines.

Q: What if my Wi-Fi goes out during a test?
A: Don’t panic. Email your instructor ASAP. Canvas autosaves quiz answers, and your instructor can often reset the attempt if needed.

Q: Can I use my phone or tablet for online classes?
A: Yes! The Canvas Student app is mobile-friendly, and most features work well on phones or tablets. But for big assignments or quizzes, a computer is usually best. *
