This is especially true with human subject research. Throughout history, technological and medical advances have provided great benefits to society but have also introduced ethical dilemmas. An example of this is an increase in life expectancy. Modern medicine and technology has allowed humans to live longer and have more productive lives. As a consequence, a total new avenue of research is being undertaken to address issues that are relevant to the geriatric population.

It is the Office of Compliance's responsibility to implement the appropriate administrative oversight to assure that MTSU's policies and procedures designed for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects are effectively applied in compliance with its Federal Wide Assurance.

Federal Wide Assurance ("FWA")
The FWA is a contract or agreement that establishes standards for human subjects research as approved by the Office for Human Research Protections ("OHRP"). It is the policy of the Institutional Review Board ("IRB") of Middle Tennessee State University to uphold its Assurance as filed with the OHRP. The FWA number of MTSU is: 00005331. A copy of the approval can be found by clicking here.
