FAQ

Chapter 33 is known as the GI Bill, Post 9/11. Example letter. The Veteran may use it and a dependent may use it, IF the veteran transferred those benefits to them while in service and after obligated additional time. The benefits may not be transferred once out of service. You can apply here.

Chapter 35 is the Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program. If you’re the spouse or child of a Veteran who has died, is missing, or has a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability, you can apply here.

NO, you cannot use Chapter 33 and 35 but you can alternate between them when registering for the next semester.

If you are the veteran, we must have either your 1- DD214 or LES, and 2 – your COE

If you are dependent, we must have your COE.

Once we receive your SOU and your BUAF (A NEW ONE EVERY SEMESTER) we let the bursars office (CH33) know so they can take off the anticipated VA payment, the process can take up to 14 days. For Ch35 – we let the VA know – they send the payments directly to you.

A COE is a Certificate of Eligibility that is sent to you by the VA after you apply for it on the VA.GOV website. You will be required to make an ID.ME account. Students under 18 can have their parents apply via paper application. All students using benefits are required to have one.

SOU is you Statement of Understanding that lets the Daniels Center know you want to use your VA benefits. The dropdown box will allow you to choose which one.

The BUAF is the Benefit User Advising Form – it is a list of your classes, once you fill it out, it goes to your advisor, they sign off with an approve or disapprove that the classes that you are taking fall under your major(that is the only way the VA will pay for those). That gets sent to us.

Once you have been accepted to MTSU, done orientation, turned in the required documents to our office and then registered for classes – reach out to the Daniels Center and request a veterans tab (vet tab) in your pipeline account. You will then do your SOU and your BUAF.

You are required to do a new BUAF, with only the added classes, then email either [email protected] or [email protected] to let them know that you made changes so they can update the VA.
