MTSU Risk Philosophy

The MTSU Risk Philosophy seeks to balance enterprise-wide risk management with thoughtful and meaningful strategic planning in which the University's Board of Trustees, members of Executive Leadership, Faculty, and Staff are engaged. While elements of risk are inherent in any institution's operation, MTSU acknowledges that risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and continuous improvement are among the hallmarks of institutional sustainability; academic and research innovation; financial integrity and growth; and data protection. The University further believes that integrated risk management and institutional compliance planning additionally serves to support its mission of providing a student-centered, culturally rich, innovative, experiential learning environment for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The University's Risk Philosophy and risk management and compliance program strategy is supported by the experienced leadership of its President, Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, as well as members of the senior management team, Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, Department Chairs, Managers, Faculty, and Staff.  Together, MTSU's divisional, departmental, and College leadership and Staff remain committed to promoting and enhancing institutional student success, financial integrity, operational transparency, community engagement, international partnerships, and research innovation, which aligns with the institution's overall risk management strategies, internal control system, and compliance program.

Annual risk assessments, internal/external auditing, review of conflict of interests, and educational training on compliance topics are a part of MTSU's overall institutional compliance program to ensure its financial and operational integrity and to combat, fraud, waste, and abuse of State resources. The operational and financial controls utilized by the leadership, faculty, and Staff additionally help to make MTSU the destination of choice for quality undergraduate and graduate education, transfer programs, and innovative research.

The University's Risk Philosophy is reviewed annually by the Enterprise Compliance and Risk Management Committee to ensure that it remains consistent with MTSU's mission, strategic goals, and community standards.
