In Fall 2023, the Planning Committee solicited feedback on MTSU’s Mission and Vision statements and used the Mission Survey results to inform proposed revisions.
The Strategic Planning Leadership Committee and four Subcommittees received their charge and began plan development. The Committee launched the new Strategic Plan 2035 website and shared an update on fall activities with stakeholders.
In Spring 2024, the Strategic Plan Committee focused on listening to university stakeholders to receive feedback and suggestions for goals and strategies to be considered for plan development.
In order to develop a clearer understanding of the current environment in which MTSU operates, the Committee distributed a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) survey. More than 750 faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the MTSU Board of Trustees responded to the survey. The Committee also held SWOT-focused listening sessions, which were attended by many constituents, including students, faculty, department chairs, deans, staff, administrators, vice presidents, vice provosts, Center and Interdisciplinary Directors, the MTSU Foundation Board, the MTSU Alumni Board, and the MTSU President.
In March and April 2024, the Committee conducted a second series of listening sessions to solicit feedback on the emerging themes discovered through analysis of the SWOT survey and initial listening sessions.
In May 2024, the Strategic Planning Committee held a daylong retreat to review stakeholder feedback and brainstorm potential priorities, strategies, and initiatives for the University.
The Committee developed the Draft Strategic Plan Framework and Context for Planning. MTSU campus leaders were invited to provide feedback, which was incorporated into subsequent revisions of the documents.
In September 2024, the Strategic Plan Committee shared the Strategic Plan Framework with University stakeholders in further listening sessions and a survey, which revealed strong support for the proposed plan priorities.
Work shifted from plan development to implementation in November 2024, and an implementation committee comprised of Strategic Planning Committee co-chairs and implementation partners across the University’s divisions began establishing concrete action steps for the 2025-2026 academic year.
