Support Training and Renewing Opportunity for National Guardsmen

The Tennessee S.T.R.O.N.G. Act established a pilot program to provide eligible members of the Tennessee National Guard tuition funding toward a first time bachelor degree through a tuition reimbursement program. Official rules can be found here or here

Process:

  1. Enroll in classes
  2. Apply first for Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA).  You must include documentation that you applied for FTA, such as a screen shot of the FTA submission web page or the paperwork generated at completion.  Submit approved Tuition Authorization to bursarmt@mtsu.edu.
  3. Complete the S.T.R.O.N.G. application packet  (you will need to have the Bursar’s Office complete the SECTION IV- Enrollment Certification portion.  You may email bursarmt@mtsu.edu the Authorization to Release form along with your student ID number (no full SSNs).  The completed form will be sent to your MTSU email address.
  4. Once the application packet is complete, including the FTA documentation, save as one document and then email to your branch of service’s mailbox and include the term in the subject line (i.e. ”Spring 2020 Application Packet”).

    Army: tn.tnarng.mbx.ngtn-state-tuition-assistance-army@mail.mil
    Air: tn.tnarng.mbx.ngtn-state-tuition-assistance-air@mail.mil

  5. As this is a tuition reimbursement program, students are expected to pay in full or on the installment payment plan and be reimbursed by TN STRONG if eligibility requirements are met.  You may qualify for a tuition deferment if:

An acceptance letter from TN STRONG has been received before the fee payment deadline.  To ensure that TN STRONG has enough time to process your application packet before the deadline, please submit your completed application packet to TN STRONG as soon as possible.  Request the Enrollment Certification form from the Bursar’s Office as soon as you receive your online billing statement.

The Deferment Paperwork has been completed by the fee payment deadline.  The deferment, if eligible, will be processed once we receive an acceptance letter.  The amount deferred is the total amount of instate undergraduate tuition and fees less any FTA, federal or state funded grants, scholarships or discounts.  The deferment will not cover out-of-state tuition charges, dorm, or meal plan charges.
  6. You must confirm or pay any remaining balance due by the fee payment/confirmation deadline.
