ProctorU & Record+, Information for Students

Record+ is an automated proctoring service that allows you to take exams online through our LMS by using the Guardian Browser. The service authenticates your identity, as well as monitors and records your computer screen, microphone input and the video from your webcam. Review the RECORD+ proctoring service page.


Before You Take Your Exam:

  1. Create your ProctorU Account. (Inside the LMS. Do not go to the ProctorU website.)
  2. Download and install the Guardian Browser.
  3. Test Your Equipment to make sure your hardware is compatible with ProctorU.
  4. Find an Acceptable Space to take your exam. (The space needs to be quiet, well lit, and away from other people.)
  5. You must have a front-facing camera to complete the monitor scan.
  6. Use a fast and reliable internet connection. Run an internet speed test like Google’s speed test or speedtest.net to determine your speed.

Checklist to Take Your Proctored Exam:

  1. Download the Guardian Browser.
    • Close all other applications.
    • Do Not use any other browser. (Only use the Guardian browser when taking a proctored exam.)
  2. Log into  (D2L) with the Guardian Browser
    • Do Not go to or log into the ProctorU website.
  3. Click the ProctorU button in the top navbar.
    • Do Not click the Quiz button.
  4. You should see a list of the quizzes that are being proctored.
  5. Confirm you are in the window of time to take the proctored exam.
    • If the window of time to take the  proctored quiz has closed, you will not see the quiz
    • If the window of time for the proctored quiz has not started, you will not see the quiz.
  6. Locate the quiz you want to take & click the title, of that exam.
  7. The quiz should start.
    • You will need a computer with a camera, microphone and your picture ID to take your exam.

Note:

  • You Do Not schedule exams with ProctorU.
  • You can only take the quiz during the time frame, set by your instructor.
  • Record+ exams will only show when logging in to D2L, with the Guardian Browser, when the exam is open.
  • If you are being asked to enter a password – You may not be using the Guardian browser or you went to the quizzes button, and the quiz is not using ProctorU.

Q: Is There an Additional Cost to Use ProctorU?

A: There is no fee for students to use ProctorU Record+.

Q: Scheduling Your Exam(s)

A: With RECORD+ you DO NOT schedule an appointment.

Note: If you use the MTSU Testing Center you will need to schedule a time to take the exam.

Q: What if I am prompted to enter an access code?

A: If you are prompted for an access code or password when you try to open the exam, ensure that you are using Guardian browser. Restart your computer and try again.

Note: Be sure to close all other applications and web browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, that might re-open on startup.

Q: What if I’m using a Chromebook, smartphone, Tablet, or iPad?

A: Chromebooks, smartphones, tablets, & iPads are not supported! Your computer must use Windows or Mac OS.

Tips for Taking Your Exam

Review and follow the steps outlined in What to Expect on Exam Day.

  1. Choose a location that is appropriate for a monitored testing situation.
    • It should be quiet – alone with no interruptions – well-lit with no backlighting.
    • Ideally sit with your back toward the door.
  2. Have all required materials for your exam, including your Photo ID for authentication.
  3. Clear your workspace and remove any unpermitted items.
  4. Review: 
  5. Review What time should I arrive for my exam? and expect some start-up time.
    • Log-in 5 minutes early for your scheduled session.
    • The session begins with an authentication process and set-up time.
