Grades and GPA

Grades are entered online by the instructor after your final exam. To view final grades, access PipelineMT, select Registration & Student Records left menu, then click Final Grades in the Academic Records box.  If you have a hold, you won’t be able to see your grades. You can come to the One Stop counter, show a photo ID, and ask to see your grades.

GPA

There are a number of different GPA types that have different calculations and uses. All GPA types except for Lottery GPA have a regular and combined version. The combined GPA types include developmental/remedial courses if applicable.

Institution: MTSU College level courses/grades

Transfer: College level courses from schools other than MTSU (Includes GPA Hours and Quality Points for transfer work posted prior to Summer 2015)

Transfer Combined: College and Developmental level courses from schools other than MTSU (Includes GPA Hours and Quality Points for transfer work posted prior to Summer 2015)

Inclusive: MTSU and Transfer College level courses/grades (Includes GPA Hours and Quality Points for all MTSU and transfer work posted)
[Used to determine undergraduate Latin Honors effective December 2019. Used to determine admission/candidacy to programs such as Nursing, College of Business, College of Media and Entertainment.]

Inclusive Combined: MTSU and Transfer College and Developmental level courses/grades (Includes GPA Hours and Quality Points for all MTSU and transfer work posted)

Overall: MTSU College level courses/grades and Transfer College level courses/grades posted prior to Summer 2015. Transfer College level grades not included if posted Summer 2015 and after.

Lottery GPA: GPA includes all MTSU and Transfer College and Developmental level courses/grades (excluding dual enrollment coursework taken prior to high school graduation) and is used to determine lottery scholarship eligibility.

Repeating a course

You can repeat a course to raise your GPA. The first time you repeat a course (second attempt), the grade you earn replaces the grade for your first attempt in the calculation of your GPA. No course should be attempted more than twice except upon advice of your advisor. The last grade earned will count even if the last grade received is lower than what you earned in your first attempt. All repeated courses remain on your transcript with a repeat notation. Students may not repeat a course in which they have previously earned the grade of “A”, “B”, or “P” without written approval from the chair of the department of the repeated course.

Veterans receiving educational assistance benefits may not repeat courses previously passed and receive financial assistance for those courses.

Pass/Fail Grade Option – Spring 2020 Only

After consultation with and approval by faculty representatives, MTSU offered students enrolled during the Spring 2020 semester the choice to “opt-in” to a Pass-Fail grade scale for most courses. Students were given the opportunity to choose the passing grade (PCV) instead of a regular letter grade. If students earned either a grade of “A” or “F”, that was noted on the transcript instead of PCV if a student opted in to that grade type. The PCV grade cannot be retroactively changed to another letter grade, nor can MTSU determine what the student’s actual grade would have been in those classes.
