Training Options

Instructional Session

Our trainers will teach you different exercises with or without equipment, tailored to your interests and level. They will also go over how to structure a basic workout and the programs and services we offer to support you. Sessions are 1 hour.

Form Check

For those that are looking for feedback on certain exercises and techniques. Sessions will be about 30-minutes with one of our Fitness Staff Members.

MyFit Individualized Fitness Program

Trainers will make a custom workout program that fits to the amount of time you have, what you like/don’t like/want to try, and preferred workout location (Rec Center, home, etc.). You will be taught all exercises and then complete the program on your own time. You will still have contact with your trainer for any questions along the way.

This individualized program will provide resources and tools on health and wellness through fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle. You meet with a Fitness Specialist for 3 sessions and then complete the workouts on your own. Workouts can be designed for any level, from those new to working out to those looking to add to their current program.

Each client receives a custom 4-week schedule and workout programs specific to their goals (including cardio, resistance training, and flexibility). They are created specifically for you. We can design programs to be completed at the Rec Center or somewhere else.

MyFit is made up of 2 sessions with the option for a third (see below). While meant to be an independent program, you will have 2 meetings with a trainer to establish a program and go over all of the exercises. You can set up an accountability method with your Fitness Specialist and you can contact them throughout with any questions throughout the program.

Intake Session (1 hour)
This session is used to identify your goals, talk about resources and education to help you reach these goals, your likes/dislikes, and your time commitment for a fitness program.

Program Session (1 hour)
This session is typically 1 week after your Intake. Your Fitness Specialist will present you with your 4-week fitness program. They will walk you through the progressions and make sure you feel comfortable with the exercises provided. You will complete the program independently, however you can always reach out to your trainer with questions.

Follow-Up Form and Optional Session
A form will be sent to you about 4-6 weeks out to check how things are going, and if you are seeking any changes. You will have the option to request an additional in-person session (30 minutes) if you want to further discuss any changes or ask your trainer questions.

Personal Training

Personal Training is regularly scheduled 1:1 workouts with a certified Personal Trainer. You will still set goals and be provided workouts to complete outside of the sessions, but this option allows for supervision during scheduled workouts and on-the-spot feedback. This is a great option for those looking for increased accountability and anyone who needs more supervision due to certain medical or health needs.

Group Training

Group Training is like Personal Training, but with 2-4 people. You will still set goals and be provided workouts to complete outside of the sessions. This is a great option for those looking to workout with a buddy or buddies and work with a Personal Trainer at a lower cost. Different abilities and experience levels can be in the same group, however everyone in the group must have a similar interest in the type of workout.

Sessions will be schedule based on a frequency that works for you and your Trainer. Your trainer will work with you to determine what is best.

Intake Session (1 hour)
This session is used to identify your goals, talk about resources and education to help get you reach these goals, your likes/dislikes, and set up when you and your Trainer will meet.

The initial Intake Session is for new clients and does not count toward the sessions purchased.

Training Sessions (1 hour*)
Your Trainer will lead you through workouts at each session, providing feedback and education along the way. You will also get workouts to complete outside of your sessions to ensure you are doing all you can to work towards your goals.

*Most clients schedule 1-hour training sessions, though they can be broken down into 30-minute sessions if your trainer agrees it will be a good fit for you. This would double the amount of sessions (so a 4-pack would be 4 sessions if 1-hour or 8 sessions if 30-minutes).

Cost

You must be an MTSU Student/Faculty/Staff or have a current Campus Rec Membership (and maintain the membership) to purchase and use sessions. Sessions will not be refunded or credited due to graduation, separation from the University, or an expired membership (see the Memberships page for more information).

All sales are final, and no refunds or partial refunds will be provided, except in extenuating circumstances (i.e., an unanticipated medical situation). To inquire, please email Tess Swastek at [email protected].

We work as promptly as we can to assign trainers. Completing the Interest Form (for MyFit and Training) as instructed and providing as much availability as possible helps the process move quicker. We work with multiple systems for the Interest Forms, payment, and scheduling so most emails are sent to you manually and may take up to 72 business hours. We ask your patience during breaks, as staff hours may be reduced. If you want to check the status of your request, please email [email protected].

We use your preferences and availability to assign trainers. If we cannot meet your preferences or do not have a trainer with availability that matches yours, we will reach out to you to see what we can make work.

Personal Trainers
Personal Trainers are assigned for Personal Training and Group Training. Each has passed a certification exam and maintain a current nationally-accredited personal training certification. All Personal Trainers also work as Fitness Specialists.

Fitness Specialists
Fitness Specialists are assigned for Equipment Orientations, Form Checks, and MyFit programs. They have completed specific upper-level Exercise Science courses or have completed Personal Training Education Prep program with Campus Rec and have displayed sufficient knowledge to work with clients. They are preparing to take a certification exam and all programming is reviewed by the Fitness or Personal Training Coordinator.

Main differences:

  • Lower cost
  • Works around your schedule
  • Location flexibility

It is a custom program you are taught and then complete on your own time, as opposed to scheduling workouts with a trainer. We can also make programs that you can complete at home or your office, whether you have any fitness equipment or not.

Paperwork for MyFit, Personal Training, and Group Training will be emailed with the payment information or the scheduling link. There is not currently paperwork needed for Equipment Orientations or Form Checks.

Health History
The Health History provides the Trainers with pertinent medical information needed to assure they are providing the safest and healthiest programs for each client. They are certain medications, health conditions, etc. that can impact what or how they are able to provide training.

For individuals that are currently active, if there are no sign or symptoms of cardiorespiratory issues, typically you will be able to proceed based on your current activity level. For individuals that have sign or symptoms of cardiorespiratory issues, we may require approval from a physician or other relevant health professional (such as a physical therapist) before beginning to assure we are following required steps. For MTSU Students, Health Services can often provide this approval.

We follow all HIPAA Standards, so your medical information is kept confidential and only utilized for purposes directly related to your training program.

New Client Training Form
This paperwork is for you to start thinking about the topics that you and trainer will discuss during the Intake session. It also helps your Trainer see what areas you may want to focus on and have some resources pulled in advance.

This paperwork is also kept confidential between you and only utilized for training purposes. Though it is not medical, it is kept with the Health History and follows the same HIPAA protections.

For all of our programs, please be mindful that most of our Personal Trainers and all Fitness Specialists are students. Many of their schedules are built that they only come to the Rec Center when they have clients, so we ask you be considerate of their time as we will be with yours.

We do understand that emergency happen and will always do our best to accommodate your needs, though we ask you not to repeatedly no show or cancel. The same expectation is held for our Trainers – cancellations will only be done when unavoidable.

Instructional Sessions and MyFit
If you have your the contact information for the Trainer you are working with, it is best to contact them directly. We ask that you try to provide at least a 24-hour notice.

If you do not have the Trainer’s contact information…

  • and it is more than 24 business hours prior to the sessions, email [email protected] or call 615-904-8473 (be sure to leave a voicemail if no one answers).
  • and it is less than 24 business hours prior to the sessions call the Campus Recreation Membership Office at 615-898-2104 so they can contact the trainer.

The trainer will reach out to reschedule.

Personal Training
The formal protocol is that sessions that are cancelled within 24-hours or no-shows result in the loss of that session, however trainers may have more leniency.

Group Training
The same protocol is in place as for Personal Training.

With Group Training, please also note that if one group member is not at the session, they will forfeit that session. We strongly recommend groups communicate and decide if they would rather reschedule in advance if a group member knows they will not be there.

Our Training Programs, including MyFit, are completed by Personal Trainers. They can give general information about nutrition basics and where to find valid and reliable resources. They do not provide meal plans, specific numbers, or anything that falls into medical nutrition, as that is outside of their scope of practice (even if they have a nutrition certification).

Individuals seeking more in-depth nutrition information should make sure they are working with a Registered Dietitians, licensed medical professionals with a degree in nutrition. Please note that this is different than a Nutritionist, whom only have a certification in nutrition and should never be providing more than basic and general nutrition information.

MTSU Students have access to a Registered Dietitian for free through MT Dining. For Faculty/Staff or others seeking nutrition information, you can email [email protected] and we can provide recommendations for RD in the area.

Any other questions can be sent to [email protected] and they Fitness & Wellness Staff will respond in a timely manner.
